Wooden aerating-Bases rest inside the Compost Bin creating a raised platform and air gap. They are ideal where the conditions are difficult such as gravelled areas and they provide a low shelf from which material can be easily forked or shovelled off. They create a 2-3" (5-7.5cm) air gap at the base which aids the composting process and helps prevents material staying wet and soggy at the base. There is also a 1/2" (13mm approx.) between the boards which aids air intake. .

Two aerating-Bases in a double Compost Bin Three aerating-Bases in a triple Composter Experience/Research - "on emptying one of the compost bins which uses an aerating-Base we found that the compost had been made successfully right down to the base. Composting worms had managed to reach the contents. The air gap had also been maintained and from a practical point of view it was useful when emptying the contents to find a flat surface from which to 'spade off' the compost. The soil underneath our compost bin contains builders rubble which was kept separate from our compost."
